Last night with nothing really to do, I hopped on the web and started to look for something interesting. My first instinct is always to relate it to volleyball and coaching/playing. Eventually I stumbled on a blog post where there was a man named Coach John Wooden. A long time basketball coach at UCLA as well as elementary school teacher, I figured he probably had something interesting to say. He was a very successful coach and all of his players respect him a great deal.
Little did I know that this one guy would change my whole coaching perspective in about 20 minutes. Everything he had to say seemed like it could directly apply to adjustments I can try out in my own coaching. Much of what he had to say regarded the focus that everyone has on winning. If you don’t win, you are not successful. Instead, he defines these two things as independent of each other and very different. I will let you see for yourself below how he does this, but I think it should really be taken to heart. Now, I take this with a grain of salt because I think it is pretty easy to say this when you are a coach at UCLA and have both very intelligent and very talented players. Perhaps he had to place less focus on winning because it was natural that all of this talent put together would produce wins. That is a minor point though.
So enjoy the video and I know that this has influenced my philosophy. Check out his pyramid of success here as well.
It has been a while! We have just one week until my volleyball team will be flying out to Kansas City, MO for our national tournament. We will be there with close to 200 teams for competition over 4 days. Should be a lot of fun. Would be more fun if I were able to play, but oh well.
Anyways, I am graduating in May (I think haha) and am looking for a coaching job. Collegiate Division I or II mens or womens is where I am looking. Right now I have a couple prospects on the table and will know more in mid-April.
Lastly, I have started a Twitter account and find it mildly addicting. Updating from my BlackBerry is so easy that it is hard to resist the urge. It is pretty cool access to celebs too (Shaq is my favorite). Follow me there to keep track of what is going on! http://www.twitter.com/SHB87
I am determined to do this more so I am really going to make an effort. Especially when people annoy me so that the whole world can be aware of their annoying actions haha.
Welcome to the very first post of my brand new blog!
I always thought that people who really had nothing to say, but still felt it necessary to put it on the internet in the form of a blog, were stupid. Now I am one of those people!
I have just started to develop two different websites. My personal one, which is still very basic and not very good, is at http://www.sbintz.com. I have put a lot of effort into my other one for the Penfield volleyball camps. It’s address is: http://www.penfieldperformancevolleyballcamp.com. It’s really fun to do and has kept me busy for a while.
Maybe you’ll find something interesting here every so often. Thanks for stopping by and keep checking back often. You can subscribe to my blog at the top of this page. Click on the title of the post to leave me a comment and say hi!
